Mariano De Santis is the president of the Italian Republic. He has no connection to any real president; this character is a figment of the director's imagination. De Santis is a widower and a Catholic, and he has a daughter, Dorotea, who, like him, is a legal expert. His term of office is coming to an end, and two final tasks creep into his monotonous daily routine – to make decisions on two requests for clemency. Two moral dilemmas are so intertwined with his private life that it seems impossible to untangle them.
