James McNeill Whistler was one of the boldest innovators of 19th-century art - a contemporary of the Impressionists, admired by Van Gogh and Manet. Witty and provocative, he defied Victorian convention in pursuit of a new cult of beauty and "art for art's sake". Hearing a kinship between painting and music, he titled his works arrangements, harmonies and nocturnes. His best-known canvas, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, is famous worldwide as Whistler's Mother.

The film visits Tate Britain's first major Whistler retrospective in three decades, uniting celebrated masterpieces with rarely seen works.

Movie in English with subtitles in Latvian.
