Across Brazil’s bright blue sky drifts the slogan: “The future belongs to everyone!” In this dystopian welfare state, the condition for collective prosperity is that all elderly citizens must be housed in remote colonies. Tereza, who works at an alligator farm, is now threatened with relocation. From this moment on she must have a guardian, and the role is formally assigned to her daughter. No step can be taken without permission – but the sharp-witted woman has a dream, and soon finds a way to escape the grasp of her so-called “benefactors.” Thus begins a new chapter in Tereza’s life, where dystopia turns into an exotic journey. The bolder this adventurer becomes in savoring freedom, the more surprises, magical encounters, dramatic twists, and comic episodes await her along the mystical Amazon River. Neither Tereza nor the audience knows what lies around the next bend, but one thing is for certain: it is never too late to become oneself, never too late to find happiness.
Video artist and director Gabriel Mascaro belongs to Brazil’s new generation of filmmakers, already acclaimed internationally for their work. With The Blue Trail, he pushes back against stereotypes: “We rarely see elderly people rebelling against the system, as if rebellion belonged to the young. It is as if the elderly were not even allowed to exist in a dystopia.” Premiering at the Berlin Film Festival, the film was awarded the Silver Bear Jury Prize.
