Jim Jarmusch’s new film offers a unique cocktail of melancholy and bitter humor, an unforgettable and carefully crafted performance by outstanding actors, and an uncompromising devotion to the spirit of independent cinema. “Make yourselves at home,” the father says to his adult children – a brother and sister who have come for a brief visit – in the first novella of the film. Yet none of the three characters feels at home in their parents’ house: neither the two sisters forced to visit their mother in Dublin, nor the brother and sister who, after their parents’ deaths, sneak into the already-sold family apartment in Paris. The world is full of relatives who have become strangers, and this paradox drives the film forward. The director speaks of close relationships in moments when the characters no longer feel they have anything in common. He speaks of precious time – ironically entrusted, in all three novellas, to a “Rolex” watch. Time spent with one’s closest relatives is both a burden and a testament to the strongest of bonds. Awkward pauses, unnecessary phrases, and an eternal, mute connection with those we cannot choose: fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters…
