The scandalously decadent John Wilmot (Johnny Depp), second Earl of Rochester, has a passionate romance with a young actress, Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton). When he writes a scurrilous play that blisteringly and bawdily lampoons the very monarch who commissioned it, Charles II (John Malkovich), it leads to the Earl's banishment and eventual downfall.
